Guestbook for Jeff's Big Bike Trip
Thanks for visiting the Web site! It would be great if you would add to the guestbook! |

Wow Jeff, I sure got a lot of flashbacks reading your story. I too had a lot of mountaineering and mountain biking adventures in South America. My travel log is at:
http://www.geocities.com/chris_goulet/
However, I was much slower than you, but tried not to 'cheat', and took the time to absorb and be immersed in the experience.
I have a suggestion to improve the legibility of your text: Use an HTML table to limit the width to 60% of the screen. Your text is quite wide, and a bit difficult to retrace back to the next line. Otherwise, it's a great site.
Happy adventures,
Chris An amazing inspiration to read..! Wonderfull stories, you sure know how to keep people from there work..! I am planning a trip coming february from downsouth up to Peru and hope to see en feel as much as you did.. Thanks for sharing these things with the world.. Jochem Jochem de Winter at <jochemdewinter@hotmail.com> Enschede, NL, - Thursday, November 04, 2004 at 04:10:51 (PST) Thoroughly enjoyed the site, and congratulations on completing the journey. I've covered your Manaus-Boa Vista-Caracas journey several times (okay, so I cheated and drove it, but still...) and have also climbed Mt Roraima (...hey - at least I walked that!). Breath-taking, isn't it? Your photos brought back happy memories. I love South America and will return to settle in due course, but in the meantime must put up with wet and windy Ireland. Ah well. Once again, congratulations and thanks for the site. (p.s. Portuguese grows on you Jeff. Boa Sorte!) Tom Maguire at <home:maguirenet.com> Bangor, - Friday, September 10, 2004 at 19:04:00 (PDT) I always wanted to do a trip like that and never could. Now I am 62, but looking at your report all over, it was like if I had done myself. Excellent. Dario Pérez at <dpy@hotmail.com> Caracas, - Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 07:43:41 (PDT) Great collection!!! But how it is possibly to download? Leo at 213.232.243.2 <Leo@gurnam.com> London, UK, - Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 08:34:48 (PDT) Damn you! Your trip looks awesome. Myself and two other guys will be attempting a round-the-world trip later this year, and the first leg is in S.America. We hope to take "the world's most dangerous road" by bike, and would appreciate any thoughts/hints on hiring or buying a bike from La Paz to Coroico and on to Rurrenabaque. Thanks. My website/email addresses are below, the site has more detail on what we are getting up to. Clem Silverman <clem@silvermanhome.co.uk> London, UK, - Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 08:54:12 (PST) Hello from south america and Paraguay lago ypacaray, - Friday, February 13, 2004 at 03:02:54 (PST) Thanks much for this site! My husband and I are trying to put together a road trip through Central and South America. In order to bypass Columbia we have looked at a car ferry from Panama to Caracas and then doing a route similar to the one you put together. From your experience are the roads at all passable in an appropriate vehicle (Jeep or some such)? Would appreicate your thoughts on this. thanks Barb <mschif360@msn.com> Tacoma, - Thursday, February 12, 2004 at 09:42:50 (PST) well designed and nice website ! regards, Dolores Valencia, - Thursday, February 05, 2004 at 01:32:06 (PST) Hey there! Claudia <barrionorte@hotmail.com> Maryland, - Monday, February 03, 2003 at 12:44:16 (PST) hi jeff, i'm freddy who, like you, loves lomg cycling trips..in fact, i'm writing from an internet office in la serena, i came here by bike from santiago, it's been very good, i've taken lots of photos of the landscape.when i planned my trip, i saw your web page for useful information, and i wnat to thank you for that...by the way, if you're thinking of cycling along chile once more, just let me knowm i think i'd like to go!...see you, take care. freddy <freddye75@hotmail.com> santiago, chile, - Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at 06:10:42 (PST) Nice pictures you have here. It meant a lot for me as a Bolivian (living in USA). And thanks for your visit to my country. And Thanks for explain the good-and-dark sides you found and described in roads and (sometimes) people. Rey Verzalles <NoSpam_verzalles@hotmail.com> USA, - Saturday, November 23, 2002 at 08:20:17 (PST) Compliments to your great website, on my gran sabana tour in oct.2002 my camera died, but with some pictures from the same locations i could save a few recollections. i have the intention, to make also some more trips through south-america. A really good posibility for a lookaround. One of the best websites i ever met! frederic frederic <friedrich.boeck@chello.at> Vienna/Austria, - Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 11:08:17 (PST) Hi Jeff Nice and impressive "tour". I'm an entomologoist, so I would never acomplish it (see... I would be stoping at every single forest to collect caterpilars and butterflies!!). The Yungas photos are superb. Just one thing: why can't a scientist believe in God? - Don't see the opposition. The thruth about evolution[ismmm] is that nobody has actually seen it.. yet. Do people notice that in Nature there is not a single operation or transformation in wich a simple thing gives rise to a more complex one directly; I mean an elephant gives birth to... an elephant and if you burn a paper you get ashes, not a plant or a chordate! One sugestion to your next trip: try East Timor and Indonesia. I live there till age 7 and always regreted my way back to Portugal. Muchas gracias Juan Cristobal Mosso <jcmosso@mi-mail.cl> Santiago, Chile, - Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 13:59:22 (PDT) Captivating from beginning to end. I have spent the past four (work) hours reading your adventure. You are an inspiration to your generation. I came across your site whilst surfing for info on Roraima that my friend is currently climbing as we speak - I thought that was good. This has blown me away!! Well done. South America is on the hit list of things to do! Thanks. P.S. Stunning photos! Dave Andrew <davidandrew2001@hotmail.com> Brighton, England, - Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 04:01:09 (PDT) Jeff, I read your adventure over period of two weeks from the comfort of my office, whenever I could get a few minutes of spare time. All I can say is WOW! Your style of writing kept things so interesting, sometimes suspenseful and often comical. Like when you bumped into the local news media and were not allowed to pay for anything in town. After reading your adventures and your view of them, I feel like I know you, well sort of. You are an inspiration. Good luck to you and where ever your future travels take you! Ron Dech <rdech@embraer.com> Ft. Lauderdale, - Monday, March 11, 2002 at 11:12:02 (PST) Very inspirational! How do I tell my girlfriend I'm leaving next week? Harry <hazza@telus.net> N.Vancouver Canada, - Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 16:08:42 (PST) Hi Jeff! Thanks for the great web site. My friend Mandy and I are planning a 3.5 month bike/hike trip through Patagonia from Punta Arenas to Osorno, and your site has provided great information and inspiration! Happy Travels, Mark Mark Robbins <mrobbins@frii.com> Fort Collins, CO, - Monday, November 26, 2001 at 18:54:33 (PST) WOW, Jeff! What a trip! I found your site while looking for "curanto" and there you were, in Puerto Montt. Congratulations from a Chilean exiled in Canada. Virginia <vzepeda@telusplanet.net> Edmonton, - Monday, November 26, 2001 at 09:26:50 (PST) Que viaje, Jeff! Estoy muy impresionada! Las fotos son marivillosas! Judy Foley <Judyquilts122@mediaone.net> Woburn, MA 01801, - Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at 19:07:40 (PDT) So you biked down South America. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It's amazing. You should know my friend Jeff. He biked across China and Tibet. You should meet. Plus do you know Eric Johannessen? He lives on Vashon. And I know Felicia Fong. I'm getting married, too, but not to Jeff. Margaret <margaret7709@aol.cm> Mpls, mn USA - Thursday, August 02, 2001 at 13:38:55 (PDT) Awesome web site, Jeff! Glad that you survived... Rick Aster <raster@dutchman.nmt.edu> Socorro, - Friday, July 27, 2001 at 09:38:26 (PDT) Jeff, Well, i am really impressed! I am sure they are lots of people proud of you...including me and i just met you in Sta. Elena! The photographer?!?! Well, hope you went to the Roraima and that you enjoyed it as much as i did! Take care and give me a buzz when in Puerto La Cruz. 0281-2816647! Good luck and Congratulations again! Alexandra Dobrin <imagenes@telcel.net.ve> Puerto La Cruz, edo. Anzoategui, - Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at 06:49:15 (PDT) Jeff you crazy dude. But then I knew that all along. Reading your reports now and then takes me back to a similar (but comparatively easy) trip I did at about the same age. Then I settled down, got married, had kids, and now spend too much time reading reports like yours and..... By the way, we found a missplaced period in your dissertation and thus are recalling it. Sorry you got to start over... Yet another challenge. Ciao. The pictures are wonderful, and so are the descriptions of the travel and people. Quite a different life from ours right now. (Last week's excitment included Brad driving Richard back from Andover for the prom here in Hunterdon- changing into tux on the highway.. Kendra performing in school musical, and brass choir concerts, Me teaching T'ai Chi Chih and planting annuals.) Anyways, congrats on your guts and drive to accomplish this feat, and thanks for keeping us in touch. Tu amigo ecuatoriano Mauro Mauro <maquinet@hotmail.com> Quito, - Tuesday, March 06, 2001 at 13:24:12 (PST) Jesus, Jeff, this is terrific reading. I cannot believe you're actually doing all these things (but, of ocurse, you are) I can envision so clearly my own nights in Pucon, and climbing Villarica with jake Moffatt and Jane Logan - there was lava then. There is seriously a major book in this. Although, I must say I'm glad you're doing this without sponsership and live webcasts through Quokka sports. It's better this way. I am truly awed by this epic, and am filled with longing at the same time - where will you be at the end of march? You must be on the hijo de puta right now, Jesus H Christ! hugs n kisses Brad O'Donnell <brad@thisdesign.com> San Francisco, - Monday, March 05, 2001 at 21:31:43 (PST) Hi Jeff, As a mom I kept thinkin,if I don't try to discourage you from making such a long trip or say "shouldn't you be thinking of getting a job" or staying in Seattle to plan your wedding which is a mere 5 months away, you'd figure it out by yourself that there were more pressing things at home for you to do right now. Wrong. I should have known better. You were never one to give up on something once you decided it was what you wanted no matter how many persausive points could be made. As long as you stay safe, I'm really happy you're doing this. What an adventure. I am content to read and reread your entries. Will be glad when Liz is there with you and then Dad for a few weeks as I know you will slow down a bit!!! I don't mean to imply that Liz can't keep up with you! She just has a lot of CS. Keep up the stories and pictures. They're great.Lots of Love, Mom Marsha Johnson <marnam@fcgnetworks.net> Andover, - Friday, March 02, 2001 at 12:24:26 (PST) Jeff, you are living everyone's dream although some would think it a nightmare. When I think back to all the hikes I did in the rain, all the challenges I took on and yet all I ever beat was Tuckerman's Revine, Webster Cliffs or Falling Waters. Press on and God Speed Dick & Barbara Cunningham <Bumpsy@Prodigy.net> - Thursday, March 01, 2001 at 17:19:13 (PST) El Jefe, What an adventure! Keep up the journal entries--this is great reading. If you get homesick know that life at home is overrated. It's nothing but a grind. Good luck. Dave Dave Kalil <kalil@amazon.com> Seattle, - Thursday, March 01, 2001 at 13:20:31 (PST) Hi Jeff, I couldn't let your entire trip go by without at least one entry in the guestbook from me, so here it is . I had coffee and muffins with Lisa and Mom and moms new neighbor, Gloria this morning, and we talked and talked and laughed and laughed about everything you've done over the years. We were laughing so hard, we were crying. Even the neighbor who doesn't know you was. So I just want to say, thanks for the chucklefest. Take care. Miss you, Dale Dale Cunningham <dcunningham@redbrickdesign.com> North Andover, - Friday, February 23, 2001 at 09:51:55 (PST) Hi little brother! What a great web site! We appreciate your wonderful sense of humor even as we wonder how you keep it through some of these adventures. Keep safe and we look forward to seeing you and Liz on the incredibly more civilized Vashon in August. I guess I didn't quite understand the magnitude of this endeavor, jefe, you ought to write a book! Who is Hans, anyway, and how did you cajole him into spending so much time with you? I am happy, warm, and cozy with Jessica (where I belong), and you are out where you belong - crazy, crazy, crazy. I almost got a ticket for Santiago, but the word Aconcagua still scraes me too much. All the best, Brad O'Donnell <brad@thisdesign.com> San Francisco, - Thursday, February 01, 2001 at 13:34:09 (PST) Hi Jeff, you’re unbelievable! I remember you lots of years ago (16)... The Andes article has pics of many of your destinations. Good luck. -Dave David Groves <dgroves@apl.washington.edu> Seattle, - Friday, January 26, 2001 at 13:52:49 (PST) Hi Jeff and Hans. Heard about you through the polaroid grapevine. At one time I was a triathelete so have done a little biking but nothing close to what you guys are doing or facing. The closest I come now to a bike is spinning class indoors once a week, which I really enjoy the more I do it. My thing is ultra running but even my 100 mile and 100k races still can't compare, but I do know what it's like to push yourself and be challenged. Have a great trip and take in everything you can. So much can be learned and you can grow so much as a person when you take on something like this. I hope it is very fulfilling for you both. christy cosgrove <ccbc@mediaone.net> boxford, - Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 08:26:08 (PST) Lemme know if you get into any trouble down there, I happen to know a judge in Mendoza.
